Scottish country dancing (SCD) is the social dance of Scotland with roots stretching back for centuries. SCD is mainly danced for pleasure and enjoyment, but many groups also perform. The basic steps and formations are easy to pick up, and the technique is being honed continuously so that at its highest levels SCD can be an athletic, aerobic dance form (not that the majority of social dancers take it as seriously as that). SCD is ideally suited for families (ages 8-80+), couples, and for the individual dancer. This form of dance does not require you to bring a partner.
There can be no dancing without music, and Scottish country dancing has driving reels, jaunty jigs, smooth strathspeys, and lilting slow airs. Our dance teachers use recorded music for classes, though for the Annual Ball, we have live music by local musicians.
SCD is very sociable – it is common practice to dance with different partners during a night of dancing – and thanks to the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society is sufficiently popular and uniform that any SCD dancer can pack their dance shoes and be welcomed by a local group almost anywhere in the world.
We are a branch of the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society of Edinburgh. For more information visit Royal Scottish Country Dance Society Website.
